Stream videos from ipad to roku

I have a few movies/music videos. Is there a way I can stream those to my Roku box? Twonky only looks for videos in camera roll while the movies/videos are stored elsewhere in iPad.

By the way. Great App!! You just made my roku/ipad all the more precious.

  • Hello,

    Thanks for your feedback.
In case of iOS devices TwonkyServer/Twonky Beam application picks content from default My videos/My Music/My photos option. You can check media sharing settings to enable or disable these options.

You can beam to Roku box with Twonky Beam version 3.3.0 but you have to create Twonky channel on Roku first. Please refer to below given link to add Twonky Channel to Roku devices:

  • I have created the Twonky channel on my roku and registered it, but when I try to beam something, I still get the instructions to do this setup as if it wasn't done yet. The Roku channel works, it is linked to my Twonky account, but can't beam.

  • I'm experiencing a similar issue. Twonky Beam (3.3.5) does not appear to see any movies within the Video's section on an iPad with iOS 6.1. Any idea as to when this will be resolved?

  • Kiran,
I'm confused. What do you mean by "Twonky Beam application picks content from default My Videos"? My iPad has the native "Videos" app with a bunch of videos in it. But none of those videos show up in the Server> This Device > Videos section of the Twonky Beam app.

    Please advise.

    Thanks
    • Hi,

In case of Twonky Beam the specific content directories for Photos/Music/Videos is accessed. These directory paths are mentioned in the coding of the product hence users cannot change the path to share different media files.
If you have created new folders on iPad to store your media files then Twonky might not see them.
Twonky Beam shares videos in camera roll folder. You Select "This Device" as Server, Videos Folder and Camera Roll Folder.

      Regards,
      Kiran.

  • Hi Kiran,

Sorry but I don't understand your answer. Are you saying I need to move the videos to a different folder? If so, which

folder? I'm taking the videos from iTunes and I just drag and drop them to my iPad, then they show up in the native Videos

app. Do I need to create a different folder for them on my PC and then sync the iPad to that?

    Thanks,
    -almond

  • The way almondmilk explains it is the same way I am observing this issue. Movies dragged into iTunes for the iPad are not viewed with the Twonky beam app. This is not an issue with the iPhone so I'm wondering if the app is just not viewing the folder correctly on the iPad.

Please test this with an iPad running the latest iOS. I can provide a screen shot once I'm home showing the issue.

  • On my iPad running iOS 6.1, tapping on Videos for my iPad displays all of my photos. Clicking on Photos also displays my photos. This will be a great app once it can see the video content I have loaded on my iPad.

  • Hi all,

There are three types of Videos that the iOS devices can show:

    1. Videos that the user has in Movies or TV Shows in iTunes and he syncs them to the device. They appear in the native Videos app on the device. Some of them can be also a DMR protected.
    2. Music Videos that appear in Music in iTunes and, after syncing, appear in the native Music app on the device. Some of them can be also a DMR protected.
    3. Videos that the user has in iPhoto or in another folder on the disk somewhere. They can be synced via iTunes to the device and they appear in the native Photos app on the device.

And unfortunately, up to now the only open API from Apple to 3rd party software developers (such as Twonky Beam) is to sync and browse video content from item #3. So this is a limitation of the Apple's API (code).

A workaround for this "issue/limitation" will be copying your homevideos (Non-DMR protected) into Pictures/iPhotos folder or add to your iTunes Photos library the path to a specific folder where you keep these type of videos.

We are working on a better way to handle this case and hopefully this will be available soon.

    Stay tuned.
    The Twonky Team

  • Thank you for the clearer response Edson. Can you expand a bit more on this: "add to your iTunes Photos library the path to a specific folder where you keep these type of videos."

How do you add a path to a folder to the iTunes Photos Library? I'm not sure I get that. Can you give an example?

    Thanks

  • Since everyone here has an iDevice already, buy an Apple TV instead. It does everything I've seen asked in this thread, with ease, using AirPlay. Just one click and boom pics, vids, YouTube, even your entire screen you're looking at on your iPhone/iPad shows up on your TV thru the Apple TV. The entire screen or mirroring works with iPhone 4S or newer and any iPad but the 1st one. Browse the net, play a game, mess with your apps, anything and everything on your iDevice you're seeing shows the exact image on your TV, in real time, no lag at all. I have friends over and we'll race playing Real Racing 3, Ducati Challenge or fight on Marvel vs Capcom, play NBA Jam, ect, perfectly against each other. Each person has their own iDevice using it as a controller and playing our game on my 70" TV. It's awesome! But it doesn't stop there, when there's no friends to play against, I hacked or jailbroke my Apple TV, I have the 2nd generation model. I installed a program called XBMC (google it) it makes the Roku seem like a baby's crib toy, I'm serious. I was disappointed setting my Roku up, seeing all the requests for subscription services.. Didn't the box say, drop your cable bill or something? Yeah drop that one bill and start paying 15 more for each Roku channel.. Lol.. What a joke!?! Ok few are lifetime memberships but for $60?!? That's he much my Roku costs me but I only one channel for that much. Then there's 14 more I have to pay to watch, $3/ a month, $29.99/ a year, 30 day free trial and $7.99/ a month afterwards, ect... Wow unbelievable, what did the box say again? True that's for premium channels but there's free ones too, but who really watches little Johnny Geek show us how he hacks his computer or Suzy from Nebraska do her makeup and Sven from Norway catch a fish?? That's not entertainment to me so no thanks... Once you install XBMC, say hello to cable TV exactly like the $129 a month you paid Comcast before you thought you could cut it off cuz the box said so... Theres 5 different HBO, 4,CineMax, 3 ShowTime channels, each from different countries all around the world incl US. Roku has the one demand movie channel you can watch whichever movie you want, whenever you want in 1080p, the Apple TV has like 30 of them! Any movie ever made you can ever think of is there anytime you want to watch it, incl movies in the theater right now! Yes, you read that right! Not joking.. There's 30 of those channels called "In theaters now" channels available whenever you want! Theres even free Hulu, no monthly bill, other than your Internet service. Just buy the Apple TV, jailbreak it with XBMC and you're off in TV Heaven. There's free live pay per view events like UFC 158, Pacquio boxing matches, WWE events, live TV channels from all the countries around the world. I watched the Olympics in London, on UK's live network TV. TV series, any and all TV shows starting from the 1st season to the last episode just shown an hour ago is available to watch. No need to buy boxed DVD sets, you have 30 different channels that have all these series/shows at your call with a few clicks. Season 1-9 of Jersey Shore, Breaking Bad, True Blood, Americas got Talent, Dancing with the stars, Growing Pains, Cosby Show, Lassie, the Flintstones, seriously, any TV show ever made season 1, episode 1 to the last one incl, reunions all whenever, you want. Oh yeah no subscriptions for any of these. Just buy the AppleTV and pay your Internet! Most my friends / family have one and cut their cable, cuz this is better than cable, all channels they had and way more than they can ever watch, I usually have trouble looking to see what to watch cuz they're so much,I end up browsing amazed at what's available. There's much more too I didn't mention, hands getting tired from typing

  • BTW no I don't work for Apple, I wouldnt be telling you to hack the Apple TV if I did. Im sure they'd trace the IP of this post and the FBI would be at my door in an hour. I wouldn't risk my $125K a year job w/ Apple stock options as bonuses telling bunch of strangers the back end of our devices. I don't work for XBMC either, they don't generate any revenue. It's a Linux open source program that anyone can develop a channel or help maintain if you have the programming knowledge. The developers alll have their 9am-5pms and do this with their free time just cuz they're cool like that. Google and check out XBMC's forums, theres 2 major ones. You can see, it's just ppl, helping ppl.. Very cool community there..
Hoping I'm doing the same here, helping one of you out,you won't regret it.
Only the first and 2nd Apple TVs can be hacked not the 3rd one that's sold in stores now. That's why the price went up on the older models, everyone wants one. When Apple had it in their stores before the 3rd model came out, it was only $99, on eBay I've see buy it now auctions for $450, most are around $200-300 but definitely worth every single penny
