Twonky prevents Mac OS X Lion from shutting down

Hi there,

I downloaded the last release of Twonky Media Server and installed it on My iMac (I have a license).
It works ok but:

1) Each time I restart my Mac, theTwonky icon bounces for 45 seconds on the dock before it's ready.
2) When I try to shut down or restart my iMac, I have an system message telling me that Twonky Media is preventing the system from shutting down (I have to crash it manually each time I want to shut down my OS).
3) If I launch "Onyx" to check my system's health, the first thing Onyx is asking is to point out where "Twonkymedia.sh" is. It doesn't seem to find it by itself. And there is no way I can point it out because the only way to get there is to open the Twonkey "application content", which is not reachable by Onyx (I don't care about Onyx per se, it's just that this ".sh" file seems to be hard to be reached by the system.)

I feel like this is all related and it happens even after a clean format and installation of Mac OS X Lion (I reinstalled the system 3 times and got each time the same behavior).

Any ideas?

Thank you.

PS: Another minor thing: I don't think that putting 2 aliases (Configure.htm and Stop.htm) on the desktop after the installation meats the standards we are accustomed to with Mac OS X. It's a little bit "messy". A better integrated way to configure and stop the system would be nice. A dedicated panel in the system settings perhaps?

PPS: Asking us to connect via a social network (or service) in order to post a question around here is another issue I have. First of all, do we HAVE TO be part of any social network or service to use Twonky Media? And secondly, I don't like the fact that with this system, you (and obviously a third party) don't only get my email but also a bunch of other data I really don't want to share with you or them. My email address only should be way enough. I care about privacy, I'm concerned about this kind of practice becoming the rule nowadays and I resent the fact that I have to play the social network/service game to get some help.

I'm really sorry for the lecture and all but this really bothers me a lot.

Thank you for your help.

  • Hello,

Thanks for providing detailed feedback. We understand your concern and will forward this valuable suggestions to our development team for review.

The second point that you have mentioned is currently a known issue. We have an internal ticket open for this issue where Mac Lion is not shutting down while Twonky is running and user has to to force quite. Although our testing team is able to reproduce this issue but so far we haven't found any major cause of this issue. Our team is working on it and hopefully this will be resolved soon.
Regrading Onyx, I personally have never used it so not sure how this works.
May be other community member can help us on this.

    Thanks,
    Kiran

    To 1.
Same Problem here, the Icon always bounce ~a minute before it stop. After this, the icon show in the dock but not as started (the white point under the icon is missing).

    To 2.
    Sale Problem here!

I reported this two points a few Month ago (response was "This error is new to us and we could not reproduce"), and today this still not work :(

Thought I'd throw in some perspective on the issues with Twonky and Lion. I noticed the same issues when installing my Mac mini, but can see why they're happening.

Issue 1: Ultimately Twonky is a bit of a hack (I hope this doesn't offend anyone!). Its not an 'app' in the sense that it's executed through a shell script rather than being a front end written in Cocoa. When the icon is bouncing, it's running commands in the background that you can't see, and if the icon wasn't there (and it shouldn't be, imho) you wouldn't even notice it. This is all related to the 'messiness' you mention in your postscript - it's not brilliantly integrated into Lion at the moment. I am going to test it on Leopard to see if it behaves any differently.

Issue 2: I initially thought that force quitting Twonky was the only was to shut down OS X. If you use the 'Stop TwonkyMedia' shortcut on the desktop instead, this will shut down Twonky safely and you can then shut down / restart your Mac normally. As Kiran said, they are working on this - it should shut down automatically.

Issue 3: Again, this is related to issue 1. Because it's a shell script, it doesn't behave as you would expect an app to behave and this is why OnyX doesn't like it. Either the Twonky coders need to tidy up their implementation of their Mac software (which I believe they're doing), or the OnyX coders need to ignore, or make an exception for, Twonky being 'unconventional'. When you get the message about twonkymedia.sh, just click Cancel and it will continue as normal.

The two shortcuts on the desktop do stick out like a sore thumb. Again, because Twonky is service-based, it has no application-like front end for the user to look at. The shortcuts are there because it's the only overt way for the user to know how to configure Twonky. Ultimately they are just URL shortcuts to the web-based config page. If they bother you that much, just open them up and add them to your browser's bookmarks menu. You can then delete the desktop shortcuts, while still being able to stop / configure Twonky. Ideally, there would be a Twonky icon in the menu bar where the clock is (a la Plex or Google Music). From here there would be options to shut down / restart / configure the service etc., and perhaps a control panel applet as has been said.

Personally, I love this software. While it may be a little rough around the edges, it allows me to stream all my media from my Mac to the Xbox in my bedroom and my Galaxy S II. Nothing else with do this as efficiently for the same money. I have a lot of technical experience with Mac OS and would be a willing tester for the software if this would be helpful. It's worth the hassle.

    @andrew.duffy:

    To Issue 1:

The "bounce" of the icon is only since Lion - on (Snow) Leopard this not happens and this is disturbing, so they should do anything to fix this.

The problem is not 100% Twonky's as Mac changed the way it worked with lots of programs in Lion, hence why some are calling 'Lion the Mac's version of Vista'.

Test driving Mountain Lion now yet Snow Lepoard still feels like an upgrade when switching back.

Actually I would like to add in a clarification that this weird behavior OCCURS on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. TwonkyMediaServer starts up on system startup. The icon bounces for the longest time and then appears as if it never loaded the app. However right clicking on it tells me that the "Application is Not Responding" and that I can force quit it. The server itself works, however it's the app interface that seems to be buggy.
    THANKS
